1964-1972 Allied Knight-Kit "Star Roamer"

Allied Star Roamer

A cheapie classic, made by Allied Radio from 1964 to 1972 and selling for $39.95, the same price as its competitor, Heathkit's GR-64. The Star Roamer was a four-tube, five-band set, covering LW, MW, and three SW bands: 1.8-4.8 MHz, 4.8-12 MHz, and 12-30 MHz. Unlike the GR-64, the Star Roamer didn't have a BFO for tuning in CW and SSB, and its "band spread" was even more useless than the GR-64's, just a round dial connected to a direct-tuning capacitor. It was made for kids like me in its time, and I spent many an hour deliberating between this and the GR-64, and the GR-64 won out. About ten years ago, I bought a Star Roamer on eBay out of a sense of nostalgia -- it's an awful SW receiver, of course, but it does bring back some dreams and memories from my youth....
