Unlike the Pioneer, Vanguard, and Explorer 888 models, this Atlas 888 model was named not after any satellite but rather a launch vehicle — the first 1957 Atlas rocket was purposed as an ICBM missile, and then in 1958 and later on the Atlas was used for non-military purposes such as satellite launches.
