1956/57 Magnavox AM-5

Coat pocket radio, thermoplastic cabinet
5 11/16 x 3 5/16 x 1 9/16 inches / 145 x 84 x 40 mm
Six transistors, superheterodyne circuit
One 4-volt battery
Manufactured by Magnavox Co., Fort Wayne, Indiana

Very similar to the 1956 Magnavox AM-2, Magnavox's first transistor radio, with a nearly identical cabinet other than for some minor alterations on its face -- and while the AM-2 was hand-wired with five transistors, the AM-5 had six transistors on a printed circuit board. A later version of the AM-2 appears to share exactly the same cabinet face as this AM-5.

Just a thought: Why was Magnavox's first transistor radio designated the "AM-2", and why was its second transistor radio the "AM-5"?
